GPT-6 Sol and Luna in PressBot. The Balance Pick Is Public

OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna today, September 22, 2026. PressBot 1.9.1 ships the same day. Both are already selectable by API ID: gpt-6-luna and gpt-6-sol.

Earlier today, 1.9.0 put Claude Opus 5.5 in PressBot, admin agent and Shield only. We explained that call. This time we made the opposite one. Sol and Luna are available on the visitor chatbot, the Pro admin agent, and Shield.

That was deliberate.

Sol goes public this time

When we added GPT-5.6 Sol, we kept it agent-only. Same split as Opus 5.5. A model priced for the hardest agentic work does not belong on an anonymous widget where anyone can type anything and you pay for every token.

OpenAI positions GPT-6 Sol differently. Sol is the balance pick, coding and agentic work between Luna and Astra. Luna is the efficient, high-volume pick. Neither is framed as a flagship reserved for the hardest jobs.

A balance model belongs where the balance decision happens. On a lot of client sites, that is the public chat. A store whose visitors ask comparison questions has a real need for it. So does a booking site fielding multi-part availability questions. Locking Sol behind the admin login would have meant overriding OpenAI’s positioning with our own caution. In 1.9.1, Sol’s agent-only flag is false.

Astra does not move. gpt-6-astra stays the Most Capable option and stays agent-only at $10 per million input and $50 per million output.

What the ladder costs on your key

GPT-6 Luna sits at $0.10 per million input and $0.50 per million output. GPT-6 Sol is $2 / $10. Astra is $10 / $50. All three bill to your own OpenAI key. PressBot adds no markup.

Making Sol public means you have to do the math before you flip the switch. Say a site runs 1,000 visitor conversations averaging 2,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens each. That is 2M in and 0.5M out.

On Luna, that is $0.20 + $0.25 = $0.45. On Sol, it is $4.00 + $5.00 = $9.00.

The traffic is hypothetical. The ratio comes straight from the price sheet. Sol costs roughly 20× Luna on the same volume. Nine dollars is fine if those conversations sell products. It is waste if most of them are “what are your hours?”

Where each model earns its rate

Luna is the visitor FAQ model. Shipping policy, returns, hours, “do you have this in blue.” High volume, shallow reasoning, knowledge base doing the heavy lifting. We also switched the cheap OpenAI path for session translate and summarize to prefer Luna. It is the obvious fit.

Sol earns its rate in two places. Admin agent work that chains several steps. And public chat on sites where a visitor’s question is really a workflow, comparing three products on price and features, or working out availability across a date range.

Astra is for the hardest end-to-end admin sessions, where getting one step wrong costs more than the token bill. It stays behind the login.

Your saved pins stay put

GPT-5.6 Luna, Terra, and Sol remain selectable. Their labels now say Previous. If you pinned GPT-5.6 Sol on a client’s admin agent last month, it is still GPT-5.6 Sol today. PressBot 1.9.1 does not auto-migrate saved selections.

GPT-5.6 Sol also keeps its old placement, still agent-only. We did not retroactively open the previous model to visitors.

Plugin defaults are unchanged. The visitor chatbot still defaults to Claude Haiku 4.5. The admin agent still defaults to Claude Sonnet 5. Sol and Luna are available when you choose them. We do not switch anyone over for you.

Agencies are why. Silently swapping models across thirty client sites on launch day would change behavior and bills on sites you are accountable for. You should decide when that happens.

How we’d pick for a real session

Take a WooCommerce shop with an OpenAI key already connected.

Leave the visitor widget on Luna. Read a week of conversation logs. Promote the widget to Sol only if those logs show multi-step product questions Luna fumbles.

Put Sol on the admin agent for the daily grind, multi-step content and store tasks you’d otherwise click through by hand. Reach for Astra on the rare session where you’d rather overpay than redo the work.

Shield takes whichever OpenAI model you trust with a security verdict. Both new models are available there.

The admin agent is part of Pro. Running Luna on the widget and Sol in the dashboard means a Pro plan. Plans are still $29, $59, or $99 per year.

Update, run one workload, watch the meter

Update to 1.9.1. PressBot installs from the Freemius zip at pressbot.io. It is not listed on WordPress.org. Pick one real OpenAI workload, Luna on the visitor widget, or Sol on an admin task you already do every week. Check your OpenAI usage dashboard after a few days before you change anything else.

Also today: 1.9.0 shipped the Modern layouts and Opus 5.5. Two providers in one day is exactly why we build around model choice instead of a house default. Full notes for both releases are in the changelog.
